Zamárdi

Zamárdi is a city in Hungary on the southern bank of Lake Balaton in Somogy county, in the small area of ​​Siófok Hungary. Covering an area of ​​45.15 km ² live 2,451 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Geographical location

The city is bordered to the north by Lake Balaton, in the east of the town of Siofok, in the south of Balatonendréd and to the west of Szántód. The highest point of the inhabited locality is the so-called Kőhegy ( " Steinberg") with 176 m.

Zamárdi is accessible via the main road No. 7, the M7 motorway or by train on the railway line Budapest - Székesfehérvár to late autumn.

History

The area of the city has been inhabited for millennia: in the context of the archaeological excavations numerous remains from the prehistoric times, the Bronze Age as well as some Celtic, Germanic and Roman objects appeared. The most important archaeological monument of Zamárdi is the cemetery from the time of the Avars, the largest such locality in the Carpathian Basin with unique finds.

By 1997 the community Szántód formed part of Zamárdi, but decided in 1995 in a referendum for independence.
