Zanetto Bugatti

Zanetto Bugatto († 1476 ) is a Northern Italian painter of the 15th century. He is known for portraits at the court of the Dukes of Milan.

Bugatto is perhaps born in Milan and from 1458 detected as a portraitist at the court of the Sforza in Milan. About 1460 he is said to have a portrait of the daughter of the Duke Ippolita Sforza painted. He it is sent by the Duke Francesco Sforza to Brussels to study painting with a recommendation to the Duke of Burgundy in Rogier van der Weyden, and there is evidence from December 1460 to May 1463. He paints a portrait of the daughter of the Duke of Burgundy, to be presented to the French king. Then he returned to Italy. 1465 he is involved in the improvement of the frescoes in San Vincenzo in Prato. 1468 he is at the court of Louis XI. to manufacture in France a portrait of Bona of Savoy, the sister of the French queen, the Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza married the same year. 1471 he is at the court of the Gonzaga in Mantua to study images of Andrea Mantegna. 1472 he works with Bonifacio Bembo in Santa Maria delle Grazie in Vigevano and 1473 Bembo and Vincenzo Foppa in San Celso and the ducal chapel in the castle of Pavia. Most recently he was with Bempo and others employed at the frescoes of the Franciscan church of San Giocomo in Pavia.

After his death in 1476 the Duke wanted to Antonello da Messina pick as his successor as court painter, but his assassination came in between. Another court painter and portraitist of the Dukes of Milan at the time was Bonifacio Bembo.

He plays a special role in the Lombard painting of the 15th century, as a documentary influence of artists north of the Alps (especially Flemish painter ) is detectable with him.

Among his works are several portraits of the Duke family of Milan and other persons of the court, including the Dukes, their family and other people of the court, and a Madonna and Child ( Fondazione Cagnola alla Gazzada ). However, the write-ups today preserved portraits are usually uncertain. Was attributed to him, among other things, a crucifixion in Brussels, a diptych at Musée Condé ( which was also Memling and Rogier van der Weyden attributed ) and a sacred Hieronymus in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo ( an image with the same motif of Hans Memling in Brussels a model has ). It also provides the templates for the portraits on coins and medals of the Duke and cartoons for stained glass windows in the chapel in the castle of Pavia.
