Zannone

The island Zannone belongs to the Pontine Islands in the Gulf of Gaeta in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Location

The island is the third smallest of the group, measuring only about 0.9 square kilometers. The highest elevation is 194 m high Monte Pellegrino, where the Forest Service maintains a station and a small exhibition. The island is located northeast of the main island of Ponza. Politically, it is part of the municipality of Ponza in the province of Latina ( Lazio Region ). In 1979 she was included in the National Park of Circeo.

Population

On the island was in the 12th century, the monastery of Santo Spirito di Zannone, but this was postponed shortly before the end of this century to the mainland. Today the island is uninhabited.

Fauna

The island is a migratory bird base. It is home to various species of falcons. In addition, reptiles and insects are found. In the twenties of the last century, the mouflon introduced.

Flora
