Zărnești

Zărneşti (Hungarian Zernyest, German national corporations or Zernescht ) is a small town in the district of Brasov in Transylvania, Romania.

Zărneşti located in the Carpathian Mountains at the foot of the Piatra Craiului Mountains ( Königstein ) and still includes the ( eingemeindeten ) Tohanu Vechi district and the district Tohanu Nou.

History

In the vicinity of the place struck in 1690 an Ottoman army under Emmerich Thokoly the combined troops of General Heister Sigbert and Michael Teleki, which Thokoly briefly prince of Transylvania.

In Zărneşti but the factory March 6 to Ceauşescu era weapons forth. After the revolution of 1989, the plant was gradually abandoned, recently it turned even bicycles. Today it is no longer in operation.

By eliminating other industries today, unemployment in Zărneşti is very high. A switch to tourism so far succeeded only in its infancy.

Next to Zărneşti is Europe's largest reserve of brown bears, which is operated by the World Society for the Protection of Animals, together with the association " Milioane de prieteni " (Million Friends) from Braşov.
