Zdenko Hans Skraup

Zdenko Hans Skraup ( March 3, 1850 in Prague, † September 10, 1910 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian- Austrian chemist.

Life and work

Skraup studied from 1866 to 1871 at the German Technical University in Prague, but he joined the fraternity Constantia, risen in the Munich fraternity Sudetia. and became assistant. He then accepted a position in coinage in Vienna and received his doctorate alongside Heinrich Will. He took over a professorship in 1881 and changed in 1887 as the successor of Leopold von Pebal at the University of Graz, where he 1903/1904, the Rectorate Office exercised. From there he returned in 1906 as a successor to Adolf loved ones back on a chair to Vienna.

Skraup mainly dealt with the chemistry of natural products and made fundamental contributions here, so he succeeded in elucidating the structure of quinine and cinchonine. In the field of synthesis he developed later named after him Skraup synthesis for the preparation of quinoline.

1886 Skraup was awarded the Ignaz Lieben Prize.

In 1940 in Vienna Floridsdorf ( 21st district ) was named the Skraupstraße after him.

His son Siegfried Skraup (* April 27, 1890 in Prague, † September 19, 1972 ) was a professor from 1923 to 1958 at the Chemical Institute of the University of Würzburg.
