Zhang Zhilei

Zhang Zhilei (Chinese张 志 磊, Pinyin Zhang Zhilei; born 2 May 1983 in Henan) is a Chinese boxer. Zhang was bronze medalist of the Asian Championship in 2004 and 2011 and the World Championships in 2007 and 2009, silver medalist at the 2007 Asian Championships and the Olympic Games in 2008 and winner of Asian Championships in 2009.

Career and international success

Zhang Zhilei is a Chinese boxer who was vice- Olympic champion at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing in the super heavyweight division. The 2,00 m tall athlete sat in the Chinese preliminaries against its primary competitors Bin Li and Zhang Yunlong by and in China since 2006 No. 1.

His international career began in 2003 with a start at the World Championships in Bangkok. There he was defeated in the second round against Grzegorz Kielsa from Poland and came to 9th place. At the Asia Championships 2004, he reached behind Rustam Saidov from Uzbekistan and Sergei Kharitonov from Tajikistan to third place and thus won a bronze medal. In the Universities Championship 2004 in Antalya, he reached the final, where he lost to Rustam Saidov on points.

At the 2005 World Championships in Mianyang Chinese Zhang Zhilei won against Wugar Alakparow from Azerbaijan to points and defeated in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Odlanier Solis from Cuba to points ( 7:17 ). He got away with it on the 5th Place.

In 2007, Zhang Zhilei won in Wurumaqi / China with a points victory over his compatriot Akepaer Yusupu an international tournament. At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago he won by demolition in the 3rd round of Nurpais Torobekow from Kyrgyzstan, won over Rustam Rygebajew from Kazakhstan on points ( 20:10), beating Daniel Beahan from Australia in the 2nd round knockout and lost the semi-final against Vyacheslav Hlaskow from Ukraine on points. By reaching the semi-final but he had already won the bronze medal.

When Olympic test tournament in late 2007 in Beijing Zhang Zhilei won against Andres Ruiz Ponce from Mexico to points, but could not in the semi-final fight against Denis Sergeev from Russia compete because of an injury.

In 2008, he tested his form when Feliks strain tournament in Warsaw. He won there about Roman Kapitanenko from Ukraine convincingly on points ( 23:5 ). In the ensuing fight against European champion Islam Timursijew from Russia he won by termination in the 2nd round, but benefited from the fact that Timursijiew had to retire injured.

In the Olympic tournament in Beijing Zhang Zhilei won convincingly over Mohammed Amanissi, Morocco ( 15:0 ) and Ruslan Myrtsatajew from Kazakhstan ( 12:2 ). In the semifinals, he came to a noncombat victory over Vyacheslav Hlaskow. In the final, but it was pointed out by world champion Roberto Cammarelle from Italy its limits. Cammarelle won by demolition in the 4th round. Zhang Zhilei thus won the silver medal.

2009 Zhang was Asian champion, taking the Uzbeks Sardor Abdullayev defeated in the final ( 11:8 ). In the same year he also launched at the World Championships. At the Asia Championships 2011 Zhang lost in the semifinals against Doszhan Ospanov, Kazakhstan ( 16:15 ), and also at the World Championships this year, he never got beyond the second round, which he against eventual bronze medalist Ivan Dytschko, Kazakhstan ( 13:7 ) lost.

After Zhang had won in 2012 the Asian Olympic qualifying tournament in Astana, he participated in the 2012 Olympic Games in London in part, in which he claimed a victory over Johan Linde, Australia ( RSC 2 ), in the quarterfinals to eventual Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua, United Kingdom ( 15: 11), lost.

Chinese Championships

Zhang Zhilei has won several Chinese champion in the super heavyweight division. What is known is only the individual results of 2005. This year he won the final against Li Bin on points.
