Zhong Yao

Zhong Yao (Chinese钟 繇), also transliterated Zhong You (* 151, † 230), was a minister of the Wei Dynasty. He was a famous calligrapher as a student of the famous Cai Yong; him the development of regular script is attributed.

Under Cao Cao Zhong Yao was charged with protecting the city of Chang'an, but he lost in a hard battle against the attacking rival Ma Chao. After the death of Cao Cao's successor Cao Pi Yao Zhong was appointed under his successor Cao Rui to the Great masters of Wei. His son, Zhong Hui was also a calligrapher and officer under Deng Ai.
