Zilog

Zilog, also written ZiLOG, is an American designer and manufacturer of 8 -bit microprocessors, based in San Jose, California. The most famous product is the the Intel 8080 compatible but more powerful Z80 from the year 1976.

History

Zilog was founded in 1974 by Federico Faggin, a former Intel employee. Faggin used his experience with the Intel 8080 for the upward-compatible development of the Z80.

Later Zilog also introduced improvements to 16 - bit ( Z8000 ) and 32-bit ( Z80000 ) processors. Lack success with these series the company focused in the following period on microcontroller. Developed slave processors Zilog (SIO called for Serial Input / Output, PIO for parallel I / O, etc.) and a number of other components. The best known is probably the serial controller 8530, as used in Sun Sparc Stations and Sparc server up to the SPARCstation 20.

In addition, Zilog manufactures a range of specialty controllers. Among Zilog Crimzon Infrared transmission tasks, digital signal processors, Serial Communication Controller (SCC ), TV - controller and controller for radio remote controls.

Zilog was acquired in 1980 by Exxon. Nine years later (1989 ) bought back the company management and employees. 1990 we went public.

In the German Democratic Republic, many Zilog processors and peripheral circuits were reconstructed without a license ( Z80 PIO U855; Z80 SIO as U856, U857 Z80 CTC; Z80 DMA as U858, U880 as Z80, Z8 as U881/U882/U883; Z8000 as U8000 ). The U880 was the standard processor par excellence in the GDR, which was used almost from the home computer to the machine control everywhere.

1998 Zilog was acquired by Texas Pacific Group. After the collapse of the chip prices Zilog was restructured in the context of insolvency proceedings in 2001. In February 2008, Zilog rejected a takeover offer from Universal Electronics Inc.. In December 2009 IXYS offered to Zilog for a price of U.S. $ 62.4 million - roughly corresponding to the market value at that time - to integrate into the company. The acquisition was approved on February 18, 2010 by the General Meeting.
