Zinifex was created in 2004 as a result of insolvency proceedings by the company Pasminco '.

The company Nyrstar was the merger (joint venture ) of the zinc smelting activities of the Belgian Umicore and the zinc and lead smelter activities of Australia's Zinifex incorporated on 31 August 2007.
