Zirconium (IV ) fluoride is an inorganic chemical compound of zirconium from the group consisting of fluorides.
Production and representation
Zirconium (IV ) fluoride can be obtained by reaction of zirconium ( IV) chloride with hydrogen fluoride.
The display is also possible by the reaction of zirconium ( IV) oxide with hydrofluoric acid
Or thermal decomposition of ( NH4) 2ZrF6.
Properties
Zirconium ( IV ) fluoride is a white, highly refractive, translucent mass, which is sparingly soluble in water. From 50 ° C onwards the connection hydrolyzed in water. The anhydrate has a monoclinic crystal structure with space group I 2 / A, where in addition to the stable β - form, a tetragonal shape, and a α - γ - form exist. The β - shape consists of square anti- prisms ZrF8; each fluorine atom is coordinating two zirconium atoms. The trihydrate has a dimeric structure with triclinic crystal structure. The monohydrate has a tetragonal crystal structure with space group I42d.
Use
Zirconium (IV ) fluoride is used as a raw material for the production of optical glass fibers and optical glass, in particular for IR - spectrometry. It is also used as a component in nuclear fuels.
