Zirconium (IV ) sulfate is an inorganic chemical compound consisting of the group of sulfates.
Production and representation
Zirconium (IV ) sulfate tetrahydrate, can be obtained by reacting zirconium oxychloride with sulfuric acid. If a SO3 content exceeded 64%, as falling acidic sulfates such as Zr ( SO4) 2 · H2SO4 · 2H2O or Zr ( SO4) 2 · H2SO4 · H2O from. The anhydrate obtained by fuming the tetrahydrate or the Zirconiumoxidchlorides with concentrated sulfuric acid.
Properties
Zirconium ( IV ) sulfate tetrahydrate has an orthorhombic crystal structure with space group Fddd (a = 1162 pm, b = 2592 pm, c = 5532 pm ). The anhydrate is a microcrystalline powder, which is very hygroscopic. In air, it forms an unstable first solution from which crystallized, the normal tetrahydrate. Upon heating the tetrahydrate at 100 ° C crystal water is released and it forms the trihydrate, at 380 ° C then the anhydrate. It is also a 5 - to 7 - hydrate known.
Use
Zirconium (IV ) sulfate can be used as an intermediate for the purification of zirconium salts such as zirconium (IV ) chloride by reprecipitation.
