Žitava (river)

The Žitava (Hungarian Zsitva ) is a river in southern Slovakia.

It rises near the village of Malá Lehota in Pohronský Inovec (part of the Vogel Mountains / Vtáčnik ) and flows in a gradient from north to south, the districts Žarnovica, Zlaté Moravce, Nitra, Nové Zámky and Komárno. In Martovce it finally joins after 99.3 kilometers as left-sided inflow in the Nitra. The water catchment area of ​​1244 km ², and the flow rate is in the municipality Vieska nad Žitavou 2.5 m³ / s and decreases to its mouth at about 3 m³ / s.

Historically, the river enters at the peace negotiations after the Long War Turks in appearance, which at the mouth (Hungarian torok ) has taken place to Nitra. The Peace of Zsitvatorok dating from 1606, is named after him.
