Zoot Horn Rollo

Bill Harkleroad (* January 8, 1949 in Long Beach, California ), better known as Zoot Horn Rollo, is an American guitarist. He has emerged mainly as a guitarist of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band and Co-Founder of Mallard in appearance.

Career

Bill Harkleroad grew up in Hawthorne and first played the accordion. At 13, he switched to drums and then the guitar. At 15 he was the guitarist of BC & The Cavemen. Here already played Mark Boston ( Rockette Morton ) bass. At this time he met John French and Jeff Cotton know, moving in the Antelope Valley in the vicinity of Don Van Vliet and Frank Zappa. He has participated in many sessions, but was only in June 1968 final member of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, after Alex St. Clair (Alex Snouffer ) was excreted. He was instrumental in the legendary album Trout Mask Replica, as well as four other Captain Beefheart albums until 1974.

After lengthy arguments with Beefheart he rose like Mark Boston, John French and Art Tripp out of the Magic Band, and formed with them the band Mallard. Critics and musicians highly respected commercial success evaded but also here and Mallard broke up in 1977 finally after two albums and an extensive European tour. Worth mentioning is the excellent appearance on the German TV show Rockpalast in 1976.

Disappointed in the music business, Bill Harkleroad moved back to Eugene, Oregon, where he runs a music shop and still works as a guitar teacher.

In 1998 he published his biography Lunar Notes: Zoot Horn Rollo 's Captain Beefheart Experience, in which he settles with Beefheart and the music business.

In 2001, he released his highly acclaimed solo album We Saw A Bozo Under The Sea. In 2003 he was invited by his former bandmates John French and Mark Boston to reunite the Magic Band, which he refused, however.

In 2008, he played guitar on John Frenchs solo album, City Of Refuge, he also took with Henry Kaiser and Ant -Bee ( Billy James ) on.
