Zschopau (river)

The river in the same city Zschopau

The Zschopau (the origin of the name is not exactly busy, possibly Slavic skapp, rock, cliff or sorb Sucici; . Noise end, Crashing ) is a left, 130 km long tributary of the Freiberger Mulde in Saxony ( Germany ), providing them with a water flow of 23.8 m³ / s ( compared to 10.3 m³ / s of the Freiberger Mulde above the mouth ) more than tripled. The Zschopau drains a catchment area of 1847 km ².

Course

The Zschopau rises in the middle Ore Mountains on the northern slope of the Fichtel at an altitude of 1,070 m and initially runs parallel to the Great Mittweida in a northerly direction. The Zschopau forms the boundary between the westerly Forstrevier Crottendorf and the eastern districts Oberwiesenthal and Neudorf. After leaving the forest area on Fichtelbergbahn it passes the Waldhufendorf Crottendorf with the district Walthersdorf.

In the city Schlettau the Red opens a puddle. Then flows through the villages of Tannenberg, Wiesa and Thermal Wiesenbad. Then the Zschopau absorbs the water of Pöhlbaches. Shortly before Wolkenstein the water of Preßnitz happen.

At its another run to the cities of Wolkenstein, Zschopau, Floeha, Frankenberg / Sa. and Mittweida. Between Scharfstein and Zschopau leads the largest left tributary, the Wilisch, in the scattered settlement Wilischthal into the river.

The windungsreiche, increasingly narrow and rocky Zschopautal is accompanied by the structurally interesting Zschopautalbahn.

In Floeha, north of the valley landscape dominant hunting lodge Augustusburg, their flows to the same largest tributary. The Floeha exceeds the Zschopau here even slightly in size. In the Kriebstein in the narrow valley below the castle Kriebstein the Zschopau is jammed. It flows through the town Waldheim, where you follow the railway line Chemnitz- Riesa. The path leads to the six- km-long bankruptcy mile section referred to Limmritz six viaducts. The valley is narrow and steep in parts, so that the Zschopautal bike path is directed at an appropriate distance past.

Finally, the river flows west of the village Schweta chub in the Freiberger Mulde.
