Two Women is the first novel published in 1989 by the German author Diana Beate Hellmann. The novel is based on Hellmann's own experiences.

Action

" Two Women " tells the story of eight -year-old ballet dancer Eva Martin, childhood and youth the dream has sacrificed to become a prima ballerina. When she had cancer in March 1976, initially threatens to shatter her entire worldview. On the cancer ward she meets her fellow-sufferer Claudia Jacoby, and between the women, a friendship of unusual depth developed. Eva spends months in the hospital and undergo a stressful chemotherapy. During their stay, fellow patients die, even Claudia's condition worsens. In July 1977 Claudia commits suicide with Eva's help, while Eva has successfully completed at this time chemotherapy. The subsequent radiation therapy brings Eva to the limits of their physical capacity. In addition, irradiation is successful, so that Eva can be operated on. After the surgery, made ​​a renewed cycle of irradiation and in May 1978, after 26 months of hospitalization, Eva Martin is discharged as cured.

Filming

The book was made ​​into a film in the same year by Carl Schenkel, who wrote the screenplay in collaboration with Bea Hellmann. The main roles were played by Jami Gertz as Eva and Martha Plimpton, who took over the role of Claudia. In the supporting roles are seen, among other things, George Peppard and Rip Torn. Although the book takes place in Germany, the plot was shifted in the film in the United States. The American title of the movie was Silence Like Glass. The film received a 1990 nomination for the German Film Award in the category " Best Feature Film ".
