A World Championship

The tournament of the A group, which was held in Helsinki, was overshadowed by the first detected cases of doping of World Cup history. The Swede Ulf Nilsson in the first game Sweden - Poland and the Finn Stig Wetzell in the match Finland - Czechoslovakia tested positive for ephedrine. The players were suspended for the further course of the tournament, the victories of Sweden and Finland converted to 0:5 defeats on green table. In addition to the affected teams from Sweden and Finland, but was particularly the GDR team mourner this doping decisions; because the direct competitor in the fight against relegation Poland thus received two unexpected points that were crucial for the descent decision in the end, although the GDR had been successful in direct comparison with Poland.

The sporting event this year took a very eventful history. At first it looked like a title of started with three wins in the tournament Czechoslovaks, the 7-2 defeat taught the highest since the 1955 World Cup Matchday fourth of to date also undefeated Soviet team. Ultimately, however, the constancy of the titleholder should again make the difference, the rest of his games - including the return match against the Czechs - all won, earning him the 13th FIFA World Cup and the 16th European title. Although the title holder of 1972 in the second round next to the defeat against the Soviet Union against Finland and Sweden had left empty-handed, the second place was at least never at risk.
