Anders Hedberg

Anders Hedberg (* February 25, 1951 in Örnsköldsvik ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player who played from 1974 to 1985 for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League and the Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association.

Career

As a player

In Sweden he played for MoDo Hockeyklubb in Örnsköldsvik and was first invited the age of 17 1969 National Team, but had to decline because of his studies. In 1970 he came to his first international operations and was able to convince.

The Swedish ice hockey team, he played at the World Championships in 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1974 and was able to twice each win the silver and bronze medal. In Sweden he had since moved to Djurgårdens IF.

In the summer of 1974 he went to North America. In the National Hockey League Europeans were still the exception, but in the fledgling World Hockey Association players from Scandinavia were on the rise. When the Winnipeg Jets, he played together with his compatriot Ulf Nilsson in a row with the legendary Bobby Hull. The three formed one of the strongest storm ranks of the WHA. He was excellent in his first season as the best rookie. In the coming years, he was always among the best scorers of the WHA and could surpass the 100 points from his first season in the following three seasons.

For the 1978/79 season he moved together with Ulf Nilsson in the NHL with the New York Rangers. There he was able to convince and was in his first three years, twice top scorer. He represented the NHL at the Challenge Cup in 1979. The 1981/82 season he missed due to injury almost completely. In his last NHL season 1984/85 he played in the NHL All-Star Game and became the first Europeans with the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

As a functionary

Between 1991 and 1997, Hedberg was employed as a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He then spent two years as assistant general manager of the franchise. In 2000 he was appointed General Manager of the Swedish national team and held this position for two years. He participated with the national team in two World Championships and the 2002 Winter Olympics. Between 2002 and 2007 he served as Director of Player Development for the Ottawa Senators. He then became chief scout for Europe for the New York Rangers.

As part of the IIHF World Championship for Men 1997, he was honored with induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame. In February 2012, he was also included in the Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame.
