The World Cup provided again a most sovereign title (now the 18th ) for the USSR, which had been decided after the first round almost. It was also the fourth consecutive title. A big surprise was the decline of the United States. At the same time, the USSR became European Champion 21 times. Mode
In A World Championship is returned to the host mode of the years before 1979 back. So there was again a preliminary phase in which all eight teams played against each other and then a final round the top four. The only difference is their own relegation round there should not be. The losers should stand after the first round.
When the Hockey Championship mode initially remained all the same. For the EM- rating the World Cup final placement of teams in Europe was used.
