2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup

The U-20 World Cup Women 2008 ( officially 2008 FIFA U -20 Women's World Cup) was the fourth playout of this competition for soccer players aged under 20 (deadline: January 1, 1988) and took place from 20 November to 7 December 2008 held in Chile. Chile was after the men's World Cup in 1962 and the U -20 World Cup in 1987 for the third time a FIFA tournament. It was the first Women's World Cup on the South American continent. It was played in the cities of Coquimbo, Santiago de Chile, Chillán and Temuco. It took like two years ago, 16 teams participate.

Defending North Korea reached the finals again, losing to the United States 0-1. Thus, the women from North America secured the second title after 2002.

Venues

The fourth U -20 World Cup was held in four different cities in Chile. All four selected stages had to be rebuilt or expanded in order to meet the requirements of the FIFA requirements. For the renovation and expansion of the stadium about 18 million U.S. dollars have been spent.

Qualification

The places in the UEFA awarded at the U- 19 Championship 2007 in Iceland. By reaching the semi-finals to Germany, England, France and Norway were able to secure the four European courts. Germany became European Champion with a 2-0 win over England.

The U-19 Asia Cup was held in October 2007 in China and served as the Asian qualifying tournament for the final round. The reigning world champion North Korea was after the 1-0 win over Asian champions Japan. In addition to the two finalists to host China could qualify as the third team.

In South America Sudamericano Femenino Sub-20, the 2008 was the qualifying tournament for the final round. The selection of Brazil won the title before the home crowd, was second in Argentina. Along with Chile, which was automatically qualified as the host nation, these three teams representing their continent at the World Cup.

The three North American participants were determined at the U-20 Championship, which was held in June in Puebla, Mexico. Canada won the tournament ahead of the U.S., both finalists and third-placed Mexico qualified for the final tournament.

The two African participants were determined by a qualifying tournament. As in 2006, teams of Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo were able to prevail.

In Oceania there were no qualifying tournament, the Oceania Football Confederation chose New Zealand as a representative for the final round.

Trivia

The logo of the World Cup was presented on November 24, 2007 in Santiago de Chile. On it is a dragon, which is embedded in the Chilean flag, on a soft blue as a symbol of women's football background. About the mascot was the FIFA from 26 June to 15 July 2008, the visitors of his site rate, there were five proposals to choose from. Winner of the poll was pingüino Rojo, a penguin wearing the national jersey of Chile.
