2009 World Women's Handball Championship

The 19th World Handball Championship for Women was held from December 5 to 20, 2009 in Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China. Venues were Nanjing, Changzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Yangzhou and Zhangjiagang.

A total of 24 teams entered in the preliminary round and main round in groups against each other. After the final round, followed by semifinals and finals and placement matches to the remaining places.

Draw for

After qualifying all 24 teams was made on July 15, 2009 in the IHF headquarters in Basel by the President of the COC, Leon Kalin, the draw for the groups.

The teams were distributed among six Lostöpfe as follows:

Preliminary round

The top three teams in each group qualified for the main round.

All times refer to local time (UTC 8), the difference to the Central European Time is seven hours.

Group A

The matches of Group A were held in Wuxi.

Group B

The matches of Group B were held in Zhangjiagang.

Group C

Suzhou was the venue for the Games of the group C.

Group D

The Group D games were held in Changzou.

President's Cup

The teams that did not reach the main round, played in the President's Cup places from 13-24.

Group PC I

The matches of the group PC I took place in Wuxi.

Group II PC

The matches of the group II PC were held in Zhangjiagang.

Placement matches 13-24

The placement matches for places 19-24 and 13-18 were held in Wuxi and Zhangjiagang.

Main Round

In group I the main round, the three best teams in the groups A and B, in group II the three best teams in the groups C and D. The points scored in the first round against also qualified for the main round teams within the preliminary group were played in the main Round taken. The teams each played only against the eligible from the other group teams. The top two teams in each group reached the semi-finals.

Medals for places one to three (gold, silver and bronze) show on the one hand the emblem of the World Cup, which combines jasmine and a stylized female handball player. On the other hand, is the mascot of the World Cup, a cow, pictured, which stands for the Chinese lunar year.

TV broadcasts

In Germany reported the transmitter Euro Sport of the World Handball Championship in China, planned is the live broadcast of 19 World Cup matches, including all qualifying round matches of the German national team and the final.

The banns for the World Cup had to be named until 4 December 2009.
