A Deeper Kind of Slumber (English:, a deeper kind of slumber ') is the fifth studio album by the Swedish metal band Tiamat. The album was released in 1997 under the label Century Media, producers of the album are Dirk Draeger and the singer of the band, Johan Edlund.
Music
The concept album was released in a phase in which Tiamat Death Metal had completely outgrown and the gothic metal with elaborate instrumentation of the previous album Wild Honey tended to underlaid with synthesizers, slow form of Progressive Metal or " experimental rock ". Also about similarities with the synth rock of Depeche Mode are available. Unlike its predecessor, Tiamat A Deeper Kind of dispenses with Slumber on any metal production and creates peaceful sounds of a gentle, melancholic and psychedelic atmosphere. The music is sometimes compared with the recordings of Pink Floyd, of which the band has also taken over the chirping of birds.
Instruments and guest musicians
The album A Deeper Kind of Slumber is characterized by an atypical for the heavy metal instrumentation. While the main cast of the band the basis of electric guitar ( Thomas Petersson, Johan Edlund ), acoustic guitar ( Thomas Petersson ), electric bass (Anders Iwers ) and percussion (Lars Sköld ) played, was by Johan Edlund next to the keyboard also as used etherophone known Theremin.
As a guest musician, the musicians of the German band The Inchtabokatables played string instruments cello and violin and the Finnish Sami Yli- Sirniö the sitar. The instruments by flute ( Ertugrul Coruk ) and oboe was completed (Anke Eilhardt ). In addition to the singers Edlund Birgit Zacher operated ( singer of Moonspell and Angel Dust ) as a background singer.
Reception
In the German Rock Hard Wolfgang Schäfer wrote that it was Tiamat succeeded Wild Honey to top it off. He drew comparisons with Depeche Mode and Nick Cave and praised the disc as " indicative" and " unconventional and courageous step ". Shepherd awarded the highest mark of 10 Also in metal.de the album with this highest score was considered. The only word to describe it is "different ". There generating " soundscapes " that " completely unfold their effect " after some time of getting used to. Again, the album is called in a course with Wild Honey. On allmusic.com sees Steve Huey A Deeper Kind of Slumber in relation to the " continuous audibility " somewhat settled "in" Wild Honey. He gives four out of five stars.
