History of the Association

Prehistory

FC Politehnica Timişoara was founded in 1921 and played 1946-1997 for several decades regularly in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A. The greatest successes of the club was the Cup victories in 1958 and 1980. He was one of the most popular clubs in the country.

After the Romanian Revolution and the subsequent privatization of the Romanian football clubs are available with " Poli ", as the club is called steadily downhill. After the descent 1997, the Italian Claudio Zambon took over the club, to take him to the top flight again. Instead, police found in a relegation battle again. After a dispute with the city of Timişoara, he moved the club over to Bucharest.

Start-up

One year after the relocation to the second division AEK Bucharest managed under coach Stelian Gherman promotion to the Divizia A. Thereupon, the former Romanian international Anton Doboş, owner of AEK and a former classmate Ghermans decided to move his club to Timisoara, since in Bucharest a handful of spectators came to the games because of strong competition. In order to arouse the audience's interest in Timişoara, he changed the club name in Politehnica AEK Timişoara. The new club was to continue the tradition of Politehnica Timişoara and spectator interest exceeded expectations.

After the club was sporty in trouble again and in the 2004/05 season was threatened with relegation, Doboş sold Poli in December 2004 Balkan Petroleum, which changed the club name in FCU Politehnica Timişoara, since the addition was elected AEK of Doboş because he had been active earlier as a player for AEK Athens. Balkan Petroleum invested in new players and got some accesses from league rivals FC Naţional Bucharest - including coach Cosmin Olăroiu. After an outstanding second half, he led the team to 6th place, was already replaced the following fall by Gheorghe Hagi and Balkan Petroleum invested again about ten million euros in new players. Despite the large investment and many coaching change did not succeed Poli yet to break into the top of the Romanian football.

The suggested by the choice of name and the purple team color near the now renamed FCU Politehnica 1921 StiinTa Timişoara association to its predecessor club Politehnica Timişoara prompted the FIFA and the Romanian Football Federation FRF to the club until June 30, 2008 to change its name and its team colors to leave. Since July 5, 2008, the club is now called FC Timişoara. Because of maintaining the purple jerseys of FC was punished as though threatened with a six-point deduction for the 2008/ 09 season. The decision provoked clashes between more than a thousand fans of the club and the police.

In an appeal hearing before the CAS sports court the six-point deduction was repealed on 11 June 2009, whereby the club for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League was qualified in 2009/10. There he defeated the reigning surprisingly UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk and entered into the play- off matches against German club VfB Stuttgart. Here, however, you could by a 0:2 in the first leg and 0-0 do not prevail in the return match in Stuttgart and thus missed the group stage.

Recovering the history rights

In an article published on 24 February 2011 judgment of a Romanian civil court has decided that the gambling in Bucharest FC Politehnica Timisoara legally not the successor of Politehnica Timisoara is owned by Claudio Zambon, but the run of Marian Iancu club has these rights. The Bucharest club was dissolved retroactively as a result of this process. The possibility to lodge an appeal against that judgment was not perceived. Then Marian Iancu announced that his club will return to the original designation FC Politehnica Timisoara. Under civil law, this renaming is complete, but a legal sport return to the original name is not possible during the current league operation. This is planned for the beginning of the new season 2011/2012. However, led by Marian Iancu club bears since the second half and returning to the original club crest and both on the official website as well as on the official game jerseys the name Politehnica Timisoara.

The history of the association now includes: In League 1: 1,320 games, 498 wins, 316 draws, 506 losses, and a goal difference of 1.746:1.823 and 1,312 points. In addition, two Romanian Cups (1958, 1980), six lost Cup finals (1974, 1981, 1983, 1992, 2007, 2009 ) and two runner-up titles (2009, 2011) (as at 31 October 2011).

Relegation to the second league

The Romanian Football Federation Federatia Română de Fotbal refused the FC Timişoara because of debts to the Romanian state and the Portuguese football club Benfica the license. Against the judgment confirmed by UEFA, the association appealed to the International Court of Sport (CAS ), which was dismissed in July 2011. The license revocation was a demotion of the Romanian runners-up from the first to the Liga II result. The 2011/12 season, the club closed down on the first place, but gave up the ascent, because not all debts had been paid. The club was disbanded in 2012. A short time later he was re- founded as ACS Poli Timişoara and played again in League II A year later, after the end of the 2012/13 season the club was relegated back to the Football League 1.
