Albert Taylor Goodwyn

Albert Taylor Goodwyn (* December 17, 1842 in Robinson Springs, Montgomery County, Alabama; † July 2, 1931 in Birmingham, Alabama ) is an American politician was ( Populist Party ).

Career

Albert Taylor Goodwyn attended the Robinson Springs Academy and the South Carolina College in Columbia. During the American Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served there until June 1865. Upon his withdrawal at the end of the war he held the rank of captain in a company of sharpshooters, and he was a Confederate Cross of Honor awarded. Goodwyn graduated in 1867 from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Then he worked 1874-1880 as a convict overseer. During this time he also engaged in agricultural activities.

Goodwyn was in the years 1886 and 1887 a member of the House of Representatives from Alabama and then served 1892-1896 in the Senate of Alabama. He successfully contested the election of James E. Cobb in the 54th U.S. Congress, so he worked in the U.S. House of Representatives between 22 April 1896 to 3 March 1897. In his candidacy for the 55th U.S. Congress, however, he suffered a defeat. He was appointed on 8 May 1928 Commander in Chief of the United Confederate Veterans. In addition, he went back to farming activities. During a visit to Birmingham he died in 1931, his body was transferred to Montgomery, where he was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.
