Alt EmpordÃ
The comarca of Alt Empordà (Spanish: Alto Ampurdán; German: Alt Empordà ) is an administrative unit in the province of Girona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain). Alt Empordà was 1936, when the historic county Empordà ( German: Empordà ) was divided. The community association has an area of 1339.01 km ² and 138 501 inhabitants (2009 ).
Location
The community association is bordered to the west by the Comarcas Garrotxa and Pla de l' Estany, to the south Gironès and Baix Empordà, in the east on the 115 km long coast of the Mediterranean Sea and in the north to the French Département of Pyrénées- Orientales. Together with the Comarcas Baix Empordà, Garrotxa, Gironès, Pla de l' Estany, Selva and Ripollès forms the region 's territory Comarques giro ines.
Alt Empordà lies in the far east of Catalonia, in a vast plain, which is crossed by the rivers Muga and Fluvia. In the north and west are the foothills of the Pyrenees. Much of the coast is occupied by the Gulf of Roses, whose bloated coast is marshy coast. Here is the National Park Parc Natural dels Empordà Marshes, an important refuge for waterfowl. In the northeast, overlooking the Gulf, the Cap de Creus peninsula projects ( Nature Park ) into the Mediterranean.
Economy
Tourism is the main source of income in the region, but also agriculture, livestock and fisheries are important.
