Amadeus IV, Count of Savoy

Amadeus IV of Savoy (* 1197 in Montmélian; † July 13, 1253 in Montmélian ) was Count of Maurienne and Savoy, and the eldest son of Thomas I.

Life

Amadeus IV was married twice. His first wife was a daughter of Hugh III. (Burgundy ), Anne (Anna ) of Burgundy ( 1192-1243 ), with whom he had two daughters. Born around 1223 Beatrice married in first marriage Manfred III. , Margrave of Saluzzo and her second husband Manfred, king of Naples and Sicily. The second daughter Margaret married Boniface II Marquis of Montferrat.

From his second marriage in 1244 closed with Cecile of Baux († 1275 ) had four children. Boniface (1244-1263) his only son, was in 1253 with nine years Count of Savoy. Beatrice the Younger, called Contesson, first married Peter of Chalon, Lord of Châteaubeslin. After his death she was married to Emmanuel, Prince of Castile. The third daughter, Eleanor, married in 1269 Guichard d' Albon- Forez, Seigneur of Beaujeu. Another daughter died probably in infancy.

Amadeus IV was a faithful follower of the Emperor Frederick II. He tried to expand its influence in Burgundy and Piedmont. Due to the failures of the Emperor he behaved towards Pope Innocent IV neutral, whereupon his brother Thomas II, Count of Piedmont married a niece of the Pope, Beatrice Fieschi.
