Armenians in Istanbul

Armenians in Istanbul (Armenian Պոլսահայեր Bolsahayer; Turkish İstanbul Ermenileri ) are historically one of the largest ethnic minorities of Istanbul in Turkey today. The city is often referred to by Armenians Bolis ( Պոլիս ).

Today, most estimates put the number of the Armenians in Istanbul to 50,000, 60,000 or 70,000 members. You do with it now 75 % of the total Armenian population in Turkey, which plummeted by massacres in the years 1894-1896, the massacres of Adana in 1908 and later on the Armenian genocide of 1.5 million dependents without to just 70,000 people.

History

Today, the Armenian community has in Istanbul 17 schools, 17 cultural and social organizations, three newspapers - called Agos, Jamanak and Marmara, two sports clubs - called Şişlispor and Taksimspor - and two health facilities as well as several religious foundations that have been established to all those to support activities.
