Bakhchysarai

Bakhchisaray (Ukrainian and Russian Бахчисарай / Bakhchisarai; Bağçasaray Crimean Tatar, Tatar, mutatis mutandis, the garden palace ) is a city in the Tatar Autonomous Republic of Crimea, about an hour by train from Simferopol.

In the Bakhchisaray Khan's Palace, from which once the Khanate of Crimea was ruled and therefore 300 years, the center of Islam in Ukraine is. The complex of buildings at the construction from the 16th to the 18th century Iranian, Turkish, Russian and Ukrainian masters worked, shows a mixture of different architectural styles. It is home to the Fountain of Tears, which is sung by Alexander Pushkin in a famous poem. The Fountain of Bakhchisarai has been set to music by various Russian composers, such as a cantata by Arensky (1899 ) and as a ballet of Assafjew ​​(1933 /34).

Not far from the cave Bakhchisaray city is Chufut Kale ( Cufut Qale, Чуфут Кале ), which was founded in the 10th century by the Alans. Is also added to the stone plateau of Chufut Kale one in the 8th century, founded by monks from Byzantium Pechersk Lavra.

The town itself was first mentioned in 1502 and 1532 as the seat of Khan Sahib Giray and I. Thus, capital of the Khanate of Crimea. After the Russo- Turkish War in 1783 it was downgraded to a normal settlement until 1926 she was awarded the status of a city.

Until the deportation of the Crimean Tatars under Stalin on May 18, 1944 Bakhchisaray was one of three places - in addition Karasubazar (now Bilohirsk ) and Alushta - with a Crimean Tatar majority.
