Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!

June 1, 1967

Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! (Eng.: For the benefit of Mr. Kite ') is a song by The Beatles, which was published in 1967 as the seventh track on the LP Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It completes the first side of the LP.

This John Lennon composition was recorded at Abbey Road Studios on 17 February and from 28 to 30 March 1967. As a copyright holder Lennon / McCartney are given.

During the shooting of the promotional film of Strawberry Fields Forever on 31 January 1967 in Sevenoaks (Kent) John Lennon discovered in an antique shop an old poster for Pablo Fanques Royal Circus and bought it. From the text of which he developed the song.

Lennon envisioned a real carnival atmosphere. In the archives of the Abbey Road Studios were found tapes with excerpts of marches played by steam and fairground organs. Copies of these tapes were cut from the sound engineer Geoff Emerick in small Fitzel and glued together randomly again. The result was a chaotic sound collage that Lennon liked. Parts of this book were mixed with the end of the song and let it fade away.

In Being for the Benefit of Mr.Kite! Lennon wanted " ... that you could smell the sawdust formally ". Such remarks were typical of him. At producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick, it was then to implement these requirements. Emerick was always very hard to realize the recordings according to the ideas of the Beatles.

However, Lennon was with the final product does not quite satisfied, because he thought the song for no result real work, which in 1967 the Beatles biographer Hunter Davies expressed to. Over time, he revised his opinion, and in an interview for Playboy magazine in 1980, he described the song as " cosmically beautiful ... The song is pure, like a painting, a pure watercolor. "
