Bell County (Kentucky)

Bell County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Pineville. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Kentucky, is bordered to the south by Tennessee, to the southeast by Virginia and has an area of 936 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Clay County, Leslie County, Harlan County, Whitley County and Knox County.

History

Bell County was formed on February 28, 1867 from portions of Harlan County and Knox County. It was named after Joshua Fry Bell, a lawyer and member of the U.S. Congress. The courthouse was destroyed three times. 1914 and 1918 respectively by a fire and 1976 flood. The stored documents were also destroyed.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Bell County 30,060 people in 12,004 households and 8,522 families. The population density was 32 ​​people per square kilometer. Of the 12,004 households out of which 31.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 15.7 percent were single mothers, 29.0 percent were non-families, 26.8 percent of all households and 11.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread from 24.4 percent population under 18 years, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.7 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 88.0 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 19,057, and the median income for a family was $ 23,818. Males have a median income of $ 24,521, women $ 19,975.
