Franklin County (Kentucky)

Franklin County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Frankfort, which is the capital of the state at the same time. The city was named after Stephen Frank, was killed here by Indians.

Geography

The County is located in north-central Kentucky, is in the northwest about 65 km from Indiana, located in the northeast about 90 miles from Ohio and has an area of 549 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Owen County, Scott County, Woodford County, Anderson County, Shelby County and Henry County.

History

Franklin County was formed on December 7, 1794 from portions of Mercer County, Shelby County and Woodford County. It was named after the statesman Benjamin Franklin.

Before 1800 there were only four houses on the other site now occupied South Frankfort. About 2 km upstream of Frankfort in 1798 was established a ferry across the Kentucky River. A. March 1, 1806 the first County Courthouse was completed. On January 18, 1812, the first bridge over the Kentucky River was inaugurated in Frankfort. She was high 334 feet long and 65 feet in the middle. Opened in 1813 William Arnold and John A. McDowell, the first law firm in Frankfort.
