The Blue Lacy is a recognized not by the FCI or AKC dog breed from the state of Texas in the United States. The breed was recognized in 2005 by a decision of the State Parliament and signed by Gov. Rick Perry as the official State Dog of Texas.

Origin and History

The Blue Lacy is named after its Erstzüchtern, the brothers Frank, George, Ewin, and Harry Lacy, who moved in 1858 from Kentucky to Texas and settled in Burnet County. The breed was created according to statements of the Lacy family probably from the crossing of English Shepherds ( which in turn descended from Collie ) with greyhounds, was thus originally a Lurcher. You may also hounds ( Scenthounds ) were crossed. Some sources also speak of hybrids with wolves and / or coyotes, but this is controversial.

On 15 March 2005, the deputy Joaquin Castro brought the Texas House of Representatives a proposal for a resolution, in which he proposed the Blue Lacy as the official State Dog of Texas. The House of Representatives adopted this Resolution on May 15, the Senate on May 25. Governor Rick Perry signed the resolution on 18 June 2005 whereby the decision became final.

The Blue Lacy was proposed in 2008 as the new mascot of Texas A & M University, but lost a collie.

Description

The Blue Lacy is a medium sized dog from the cursor type that is rather light but strongly built. The body is square, with a straight back, deep chest and well arched ribs. The shoulders should be well angulated and muscular, the croup slightly rounded. The medium length legs are straight, the feet firmly and feline. The coat is short and lies close to the body. The standard states that errors should be punished, which affect the performance of the dog as a working dog and that scars and old injuries as evidence of this performance should not be penalized.

The head is of medium size, strong and carried high. The skull is of medium length, with moderately pronounced stop. The muzzle should be neither thin as a greyhound nor wide as a bull terrier. The incisors form a scissors bite. The ears are moderately long, thin and drooping. The eyes are round, their color ranges from yellow to dark brown. The expression is alert and intelligent. The tail reaches approximately to the hock and is carried high.

Accepted coat colors are in addition to the damage caused by the Dilute gene blue and red in all shades and Tricolor. A white spot on the chest is desirable, as at least one white paw. Other white patches are undesirable in the face and above the middle of the body they lead to disqualification.

The Blue Lacy was originally bred for hunting wild boar and evolved over time into a versatile hunting and working dog that is also used for herding cattle and driving.
