Bo District

Bo is a district of Sierra Leone with about 464,000 inhabitants. It belongs to the province of Southern and lies in the southern center of the country. Its capital city is Bo. The district is divided ( chiefdoms ) and the town of Bo in 15 chiefdoms.

Bo covers an area of ​​5219 km ².

The residents of the Bo District mainly belong to the ethnic groups of the Mende and Temne; both Christians and Muslims are represented here. The economy is in trade, gold and diamond mining, rice, coffee, cocoa and palm oil production.

In the civil war in Sierra Leone Bo was 1994-1995 under the control of the Revolutionary United Front rebels. During this time, there was widespread destruction of cities such as Tikonko and Bumpeh. After the repression of the rebels from the district in 1999, the situation calmed down, however, and internally displaced persons from other parts of the country came to Bo. The reconstruction is well under way.

The district decreed in 2006 over 88 health facilities, including a state hospital, a government hospital, a mission hospital, seven mission, three NGO and five private clinics. 2005 1.9% of the residents were HIV -positive. 2004/2005 there were 396 primary and 37 secondary schools. The literacy rate in 2004 was for the town of Bo in 64% (74 % of men and 55 % of women ) and the rest of the district was 29 % (men 40 %, women 19%). 64.2 % of children in the city and 50.5 % in the rest of the district attended school.
