Breitungen is a town in the southern Harz in the district of Mansfeld- South Harz in Saxony- Anhalt.

Geographical Location

Breitungen is located in the southern Harz on the side road that branches off from the highway Roßla - Hayn southwest of Agnes village. Not far from Breitungen is the Bauerngraben, an episodic lake Südharzer gypsum karst landscape.

History

Breitungen is first mentioned on 29 July 961 as Breydinge when King Otto II gave this place the Moritz monastery in Magdeburg.

Breitungen belonged to the rule of the Counts of Stolberg and was a village in the county office Roßla Stolberg- Roßla.

1819 lived in Breitungen 665 inhabitants in 115 houses.

From 1952-1990 Breitungen belonged to the East German district hall.

2006 big celebration for the 1045 anniversary.

On 1 January 2010, joined the communities Breitungen, Bennungen, Breitenstein, Dieter village, Drebsdorf, Hainrode, together Hayn ( resin) Kleinleinungen, Questenberg Roßla, Rottleberode Schwenda and Uftrungen the new community Suedharz.
