Caldwell catalogue

The Caldwell catalog is a amateur astronomical observation list with a selection of 109 interesting for amateur astronomy observations of deep-sky objects such as bright star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. The list was compiled by Sir Patrick Caldwell -Moore as a supplement to the Messier catalog.

The Messier catalog is often used by Ameuteurastronomen as an observation list of interesting objects of deep space. The Caldwell catalog supplement them for a number of objects, which are among the brightest in the night sky, the Messier catalog but missing, such as the Hyades, the Double Cluster NGC 869 and NGC 884 or NGC 253

In addition, Patrick Moore added even objects in the southern hemisphere, such as Omega Centauri, Centaurus A, Herschel's jewelry box and 47 Tucanae, which are missing the Messier catalog entirely. He summarized a list of 109 objects together [Note 1] and published the catalog in Sky & Telescope in December of 1995.

Since its publication of the catalog under the Ameuteurastronomen became increasingly popular. Minor errors in the original version from 1995 have since been corrected. The original list identified the S Norma cluster (NGC 6087) still erroneously as NGC 6067 and Lambda Centauri the cluster ( IC 2944 ) and Gamma Centauri cluster. Since the first letter of the M was a family name Moore is already occupied for the catalog shortcut through the Messier catalog, the C of the second family name is used as a letter for the index of the catalog name.

As mentioned above, the list of already discovered by professional astronomers objects was created. Unlike in the Messier catalog, where the objects are listed in chronological order of their discovery, the order is defined by the declination of the objects in the Caldwell catalog, where C1 represents the northernmost object and C109 the most Situated in southern object. This order is, however, broken by the two objects NGC 4244 as C26 and C41 as the Hyades.
