The Canadian Interuniversity Sport ( short CIS; French sports Interuniversitaire Canadien, short SIC; until 2001 Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union, briefly CIAU ) is the national university sports organization in Canada, where the majority of the universities in the state are organized in form of a Voluntary Association. The organization was founded in 1961, but goes back to the much older Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union. Its equivalent in the field of Canadian colleges is the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association ( CCAA short ). Some facilities are in various sports fields members in both organizations.

Funding

The CIS members not award athletic scholarships, but there is the possibility of academic scholarships or grants for athletes who can not self- finance their studies. In the academic year 2002/ 03 the average grant was for athletes, according to the CIS at 522 Canadian dollars for men and 311 Canadian dollars for women. The highest average was placed in ice hockey players who were funded with an average of $ 1,108.

In addition, provide the universities participating in programs, under which alumni, parents or businesses can donate money, be covered with the eventually teaching and living expenses of the athletes. The CIS has thereby no prescribed rules, how much money can distribute the universities through private support. As the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association distributed in contrast to the CIS full and part- time scholarships change but still many Canadian high school athletes in the United States to begin a fully funded study.

The Canadian Junior Hockey organization supports CHL players who change after at least two years in Major Junior hockey at a CIS university. Player of the CHL may also accept or do not have a NCAA scholarship. NCAA student may, however, a maximum of 48 hours in a CHL training camp to participate, but it accrues in any game.

Currently 52 universities are organized in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport. The last member was the University of Ontario Institute of Technology received. Current president Clint Hamilton.

Organizes the member universities are organized in four regional associations which are also referred to in some sports based on the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association as Conferences and can be divided into the busy sports, such as basketball or Canadian football in Divisions:

Canadian Football

In Canadian football take a total of 27 CIS universities in the game operating in part:

The winner of the Atlantic University Football Conference, the Conference of the OFF, receives the Jewett Trophy. From 1956 to 2001 OFF the Atlantic Bowl was also from one of two national semifinal games. The QSSF - Conference helps since 2004 the name Quebec University Football League. The winner of the Conference receives the Dunsmore Cup. The best team in the Ontario University Athletics is awarded the Yates Cup, while the master of CWUAA - Conference, which is usually referred to as Canada West Football Conference, called the Hardy Trophy gets awarded.

Currently 36 universities take part in the Hockey operation of the CIS.

41 of the 52 member universities participated at the 2007 football season, the men part. Later internationals like Pat Onstad spent their period of study in the play mode of the CIAU.
