Cernay-l'Église

Cernay- l'Église is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Cernay- l'Église is located on 870 m, 2 km east of Maîche and about 30 km south of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the Jura, a scenic location on the southern slopes of Mont Miroir, over the vast plateau of Maîche.

The area of ​​5.95 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The southern part of the area is occupied by the weakly in relief plateau Maîche, which is on average 820 m. It is mainly composed of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some of larger forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. To the north, the municipality's area covers over the slope of Cernay on the ridge of Mont Miroir, in the 983 meters, the highest elevation of Cernay -l'Église is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Cernay -l'Église are Thiébouhans in the north, Damprichard in the east, the south and Charquemont Maîche in the West.

History

Cernay- l'Église is first mentioned in the 14th century. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the rule Maîche and in the 17th century it was dependent on the Bouheliers. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, the town was officially renamed from Cernay Cernay -l'Église in 1923.

Attractions

The three-nave church of Saint -Antoine was built in the 15th century in Gothic style. It has a rich interior, including sculptures and statues from the 16th and 17th centuries, a Renaissance altar, a pulpit from the 19th century and a Calvaire from the 17th century.

Population

With 282 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Cernay- l'Église is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the region between 120 and 140 people, has been since the early 1970s recorded a continuous population growth thanks to the attractive location.

Economy and infrastructure

Cernay- l'Église was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming, some agriculture ) embossed village. Even today the people working in the place live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares. The main access is from Maîche. Further road links exist with Damprichard and Trévillers.
