Charmois (Territoire de Belfort)

Charmois is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Charmois is located on 334 m above sea level, about nine miles southeast of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located in the lowlands of the Burgundian Gate, on the northern edge of the wide valley of the Bourbeuse in which there is also the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone Canal, opposite Froidefontaine, between the plateau of Les Grands Bois in the northwest and Bois Lachat in southeast.

The area of ​​4.17 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the weakly in relief landscape in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The southern border is always along the Bourbeuse, with the meanders meanders through a wide valley and provides drainage to Allaine. From the Bourbeuse, the municipality's area extends north across the flood plain and a gently rising slope, which is subdivided by several short tributaries, except for the adjacent plateau. This is an average of 360 m and is partly, partly covered with arable and meadow land with forest. On the north is the forest area Les Grands Bois, in the 371 m with the highest elevation of Charmois is achieved. The eastern border is with the Praille a right tributary of the Bourbeuse.

Neighboring communities of Charmois are Meroux and Novillard in the north, Autrechêne in the east, the south and Froidefontaine Bourogne in the West.

History

The first mention in writing Charmois in 1105 in a charter of the Priory Froidefontaine. The place name comes from the French word charm ( hornbeam ). Middle of the 14th century came the village under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. Together with the Sundgau Charmois came with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. Since 1793, the village belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France. Since 2005 Charmois is part of the municipal association Communauté d' Agglomà Belfortaine.

Population

With 293 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Charmois is one of the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1896 196 people were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Charmois was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger neighboring villages and in urban Belfort and Montbéliard.

The village is located off the major road links on a secondary road that leads from Danjoutin after Froidefontaine. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about nine miles. Further road links exist with Bourogne and Autrechêne.
