Città della Pieve

Città della Pieve is a town of the province of Perugia in the west of the region of Umbria in central Italy in the center, with 7828 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

The city is located about 508 m s.l.m. on a hill overlooking the Chiana valley, about 20 km south of Lake Trasimeno. The urban area extends over 111 km ². The city is a member of Cittaslow, a company incorporated in Italy in 1999 motion to decelerate and increase the quality of life in cities.

At its districts include Moiano, Po Bandino and Ponticelli.

The neighboring municipalities are Allerona (TR ), Castiglione del Lago, Cetona ( SI), Chiusi (SI), Fabro (TR ), Monteleone d' Orvieto ( TR), Paciano, Piegaro and San Casciano dei Bagni (SI).

History

Archaeological findings point to a colonization of the area back to the Etruscan period.

The present city dates back to an early medieval settlement. After the death of Frederick II Perugia took over the city and turned their fortunes until they turned Pope Clement VII in 1527 under the central authority of the Church.

Much of the medieval old town dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Typical of the construction is the use of brick as a construction material, reflecting the importance of the center of the brick production.

Until the Association for the Archdiocese of Perugia - Città della Pieve in 1986, the city was an independent bishopric.
