Coaña is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain.

Location

In the north, the community is bordered by the Cantabrian Sea, south of Boal, on the west by El Franco, on the east by the River Navia Navia and Villayón.

History

Ruins of a fort from prehistoric and early historic times in Coaña (Castro de Coaña ) and Mohias prove the long colonization of the region.

From the Middle Ages there are records from the monastery Cartavio, the castle, Castillo de Aguilar, and the Church of Oviedo, which predate the town / s to 970.

During the 12th and 13th centuries was begun by Alfonso VII to the division of the region; so the community Coaña between the dioceses of Oviedo and Lugo was divided.

In the 16th century the entire administration of Coaña was moved to Castropol under the reign of Felipe II.

During the Spanish Civil War was in Coaña the hospital throughout the region.

Geology

Land

The predominantly of limestone and sandstone subsoil with the Pico Lebredo ( 834 m) as highest point is typical of the entire coastal region with its steep cliffs, bays, forests and meadows. In the hinterland there are the mountains Pico Lebredo ( 834 m), Pico del Águila, Alto del Moqueiro ( 756 m) and Pico Vidrosa (641 m).

Waters

The municipality is crossed by Navia and two of its tributaries, the Meiro and the Palmión.

Climate

The proximity to the Gulf Stream, there is here an almost Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, in spring and autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms. By this climate of eucalyptus tree is widespread in the region.
