Conceptual art

Concept art (English concept art or conceptual art ) is a in the 1960s by the American artist Henry Flynt coined term for a modern art movement.

Term

Originally coming from the minimalism, conceptual art or Conceptual Art is ultimately a collective term for a further development of the tendencies in abstract painting and for different art movements such as art object or happening, which consider the idea of the importance of an artwork as a priority.

Mel Bochner first exhibition in 1966, "Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to Be Viewed as Art" at the gallery of the School of Visual Arts in New York is considered the first exhibition of conceptual art movement.

The execution of the artwork is of minor importance and not to be done by the artists themselves. The focus is on the ideas and concepts that are considered appropriate for the artistic work as equivalent. Instead of finished paintings and sculptures come in this sense sketches, documents, texts, or instructions may artists' books, which develop their own aesthetic qualities on. One of the objectives is the " dematerialization " of the art work and the involvement of the viewer. Familiar perspectives, concepts and relationships in the world are questioned, invented new rules. It works with contexts, meanings and associations.

Theorist of conceptual art are Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, Art & Language, Joseph Kosuth and Victor Burgin. An artistic example of this movement was Marcel Duchamp. He limited his art of " retinal art" from that ( for example gimmicky ) acts primarily on the eye, rather than act as an idea or combination of importance in thinking. This approach can be concept art for the layman often elitist, brittle, and appear difficult to access. Some works of conceptual art is only revealed by the examination of the artist and his thinking.

Different currents of the avant -garde of the 1960s, such as the paintings of Robert Ryman, photo books of Ed Ruscha, the sculpture by Carl Andre, Robert Morris and Robert Smithson, Fluxus were immediate and often confusingly similar precursor of conceptualism. Also, due to the influence of art magazines such as Artforum and Avalanche, Parachute, Flash Art, Art Press emerged very soon fast in America and Europe groups of conceptualist that is oriented to New York and yet were independent regional centers: in North America as San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Vancouver and Toronto.
