Since the 1920s to the late 1990s, Cup Tournaments between first division teams have been played regularly. These tournaments but had no connection with each other and were often not organized by the FEDEFUTBOL itself, but only approved. These tournaments, an example is the several times played Copa Gran Bretaña, are taking the success of the clubs concerned, but are officially counted as real national cup competitions, including the self- organized by the FEDEFUTBOL competitions.

After years of failed attempts, mostly failed the plans due to a possible little economic value placed succeeded UNAFUT and LIFUSE early 2013 to convince the clubs affiliated to them to consent to the discharge of an official national cup competition. So we decided to hold from now on the tournament every year during the summer break, with participants from the two top leagues.

Supercup

Also: Súper Copa de Costa Rica

Beginning it was decided by the Bureau of UNAFUT to call a Supercup in life, which should be played once a year during the summer break at the National Stadium. Since at this time was no national cup competition in Costa Rica, should annually compete against each other the master of Invierno y of the Verano. LD Alajuelense won the first, and so far the only official edition against CS Herediano.

When the UNAFUT in cooperation with the LIFUSE ( electrifiable association of the second division), developed in April 2013 a national cup competition, which is played annually during a month of summer break, decided to to suspend the Supercup transitional. Since a year is now a Cup Winners' Cup, it would be theoretically possible to play one Supercup, but since there are two champions per year, one of the two would be preferred. Should the Primera División in the future only one master per year determine, or the cup competition will also be held twice a year, the Super Cup would be reintroduced.
