Dave Tippett

David G. "Dave" Tippett ( born August 25, 1961 in Moosomin, Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player ( left wing ) and current coach, who in 1983-1994 for the Hartford Whalers, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers the National Hockey League played. Since 2009 he has been head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL.

Career

Tippett played during his junior time for the Prince Albert Raiders of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League along with James Patrick. 1981 the team won the Manitoba Centennial Trophy and he was elected as top scorer in the All- Star team the final tournament. In the next season, he joined the team of University of North Dakota, that played in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Here he managed to win the NCAA title all American colleges and universities.

The 1983/84 season he spent as a captain with the Canadian national hockey team and was preparing for the 1984 Winter Olympics before. However, the team missed 4th place in Sarajevo the bronze medal.

Immediately after the Olympics, he moved to the Hartford Whalers and were still in the 1983/84 season his NHL debut. In the NHL, he quickly gained ground and fought for as a defensive -oriented striker a starting place. A further six years, he remained in Hartford before moving to the Washington Capitals for the season 1990/91. In the period of two seasons with the Capitals drops his biggest success by winning the silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville.

After that, he still played one season for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers before he in 1994 joined the Houston Aeros in the IHL.

After a year as a player in Houston, he assumed the position of assistant coach, but already in the course of the season he was promoted to head coach.

For the 1999/2000 season he moved to the Los Angeles Kings as an assistant to Dave Taylor. After he had collected there three years of experience, the Dallas Stars pledged him from the 2002/03 season as head coach. For the 2009/10 season, Tippett took over the position of the band at the Phoenix Coyotes. After completing his debut season in Phoenix, he was awarded the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year, as the team had set up with 50 wins and 107 points, new franchise records and was the first time represented again in the playoffs since 2002.
