Edremit, Balıkesir

Edremit (formerly Greek Άδραμύττιον ) is the name of a county seat and the like-named district in the Turkish province of Balıkesir. The city is located in the west of the province, about 75 km west of the provincial capital of Balıkesir, on the Gulf of Edremit ( Edremit Körfezi ) on the low slopes of the Paşadağ. 2012, the city had 55 255 and 127 459 inhabitants of the district.

The environment of around 10 km from the seafront, town forms a fertile alluvial plain, are harvested in the mainly olive, corn grain and figs. In the center of the county, north of the city, lies the 21,300 hectares in Kazdağı National Park, which surrounds the center of the Kaz Dagi, the historic Ida Mountains.

Edremit has a small airport ( Balıkesir Körfez airport).

History

After the destruction of the previous settlement Adramyttion by the Seljuk Bey Çaka 1093 the city of Philokales, a general of the Byzantine emperor Alexios was rebuilt. Manuel I reinforced the attachment against the Turkish danger. In the 14th century, the city fell to the Beylik the Karesi, in the reign of Sultan Orhan finally conquered the mid-14th century, the Ottomans Edremit.

Attractions

The city has a municipal museum that displays next to sparse archaeological finds a rich collection of weapons. The Kurşunlu Cami ( Kurşunlu Mosque) was built in 1231 by the Seljuk Yusuf Sinan.

Located on the Gulf of Edremit

  • The ruins of the ancient Aeolian city Antandros, about 20 km west at Altınoluk
  • At Küçükkuyu, about 35 km west, on a mountain called the remains of a Roman military station, Altar of Zeus

From the previous settlement Adramyttion, about 13 km south-west at today Oren, no significant relics are preserved.
