Edward Devitt

Edward James Devitt ( born May 5, 1911 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, † March 2, 1992 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1947 and 1949 he represented the state of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Edward Devitt attended to 1930, the St. John's College Preparatory High School in Collegeville. He then studied 1930-1932 at the local St. John 's University. After a subsequent law studies at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and qualifying as a lawyer began in his new profession to work. Between 1935 and 1939, he served as city judge in East Grand Forks ( Minnesota). From 1939 to 1942 Devitt served as Deputy Attorney General of Minnesota. During the Second World War, he served from 1942 to 1946 in the U.S. Navy.

Politically, Devitt member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1946 he was in the fourth electoral district of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Frank Starkey on 3 January 1947. Since he has not been confirmed at the next elections in 1948, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1949.

After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Devitt was between 1950 and 1954 Judge of the Probate Court in Ramsey County. Since 1954 he was a judge on the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota; 1958 to 1981 he headed this federal district court. After that, he was, until his death in 1992 continues in this court as a judge in partial retirement ( senior status ) operates.
