Fontaine- lès- Clerval is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Fontaine- lès- Clerval is at 395 m, 12 km northeast of Baume- les -Dames and about 26 km west-southwest of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located on the gently undulating Kalkhochfläche between the river valleys of the Doubs River in the south and Ognon in the north, a trough at the edge of the Grand Bois.

The area of ​​11:50 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the undulating countryside between Doubs and Ognon. The main part of the area is occupied by the water-poor plateau, which is on average 400 m. It is mainly consisted of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. In Fontaine- lès- Clerval a dry valley which leads down with several turns to Doubs Valley begins. The northeastern part of the municipality is covered by the expanded forest area of ​​Grand Bois, in the 462 m with the highest elevation of Fontaine- lès- Clerval is achieved. The northeastern boundary extends above the steep drop to the valley section of the Ruisseau de Saye. History

Brick fragments have a population of the municipality of Fontaine during the Gallo-Roman times out. In the Middle Ages belonged to Fontaine Kastlanei Clerval, which came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Fontaine was officially renamed in 1961 by Fontaine- lès- Clerval.

Attractions

A built in 1596 chapel was expanded in 1769 to today's church of Notre -Dame de la Sainte Vierge de la Nativity; the chancel was rebuilt in 1825.

With 253 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Fontaine- lès- Clerval is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 521 persons were still counted ), sat for a temporary stagnation since the mid -1980s was a further decrease.
