Garrett County, Maryland

The Garrett County is the westernmost county located in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Oakland.

Geography

The county is separated by the Mason - Dixon Line to the north by Pennsylvania; on the south and west it borders West Virginia. The Garrett County has an area of ​​1,699 square kilometers; of which 21 square kilometers (1.21 percent) of water.

History

The Garrett County was formed in 1872 from parts of Allegany County. It was named for John Work Garrett (1820-1884), President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ( 1856-1984 ).
