Garrett County, Maryland
The Garrett County is the westernmost county located in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Oakland.
Geography
The county is separated by the Mason - Dixon Line to the north by Pennsylvania; on the south and west it borders West Virginia. The Garrett County has an area of 1,699 square kilometers; of which 21 square kilometers (1.21 percent) of water.
History
The Garrett County was formed in 1872 from parts of Allegany County. It was named for John Work Garrett (1820-1884), President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ( 1856-1984 ).
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Garrett County 29,846 people in 11,476 households and 8,354 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.8 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 0.4 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,476 households out of which 32.6 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 27.2 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households were single-person households, and 10.6 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.0 persons.
25.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 to 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 14.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males.
The average income of a household was $ 32,238, for a family is $ 37,811. Males had a median income of $ 29,469, women $ 20,673. The per capita income was $ 16,219. Approximately 9.8 percent of families and 13.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
