Somerset County (Maryland)

Somerset County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Princess Anne.

Geography

The County is located on the Delmarva Peninsula on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, on the south by Virginia and is the southernmost county of Maryland. Somerset County has an area of 1,582 square kilometers; of which 734 square miles ( 46.43 percent) of water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

Somerset County was formed in 1666 by Order-in -Council on former Indian land. It was named after Mary, Lady Somerset, the sister of Cæcilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore.

1742 the later Worcester County was spun. Was founded in 1867 from parts of Somerset and Worcester County today Wicomico County.

Demographic data
