Gheorghe Mulțescu

Gheorghe "Gigi" Mulţescu ( born November 13, 1951 in Botoroaga ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach. In his playing career he played 407 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A.

Career as a player

Mulţescu played in his youth for record champions Steaua Bucharest, managed there but not the leap to the first team. In the summer of 1971, he left the capital and joined Jiul Petrosani on which at that time was represented in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A. In his first season he became a regular player and struggled with his team to the Class whereabouts. This did not change in the following years, not as Mulţescu as prolific midfielder came into existence. 15 matches in the 1973/74 season are the best yield of his career. In the same year he reached with his team, the Romanian Cup final and won by a 4-2 win against Politehnica Timişoara his first title. However, in the following European Cup Winners' Cup, he retired in the first round against Dundee United.

With the 1976/77 season Mulţescu and Jiul played in the upper middle, but did not qualify for the UEFA Cup. In the summer of 1979 he left the club and moved to Dinamo Bucharest. There he spent the most successful period of his career. Winning the doubles league and cup victory in 1982 followed in the seasons 1982/83 and 1983/84 two more championships and in the 1983/84 season, another Cup victory, which he did not play in the final against Steaua Bucharest. In the same year he reached the semi-finals with Dinamo in the European Cup of Champions, but it lost to eventual winners Liverpool.

After he had not come in the season 1984/85 regularly used Mulţescu left in the summer of 1985 and returned to Dinamo Jiul Petrosani back, which had just been relegated to the B Divizia. As a player, Coach of Jiul in 1986, he managed to climb into the Divizia A. The season 1986/87 but again ended with the descent. Mulţescu left Jiul promoted to CSM Suceava, but already changed during the winter break 1987/88 to Autobuzul Bucharest in the Divizia B. In the summer of 1988 drew it him to league rivals UTA Arad, where a year later his career ended.

National

Mulţescu played 15 games for the Romanian national team, scoring three goals. He debuted on September 25, 1974 in a friendly against Bulgaria when he came on in the 72nd minute for Anghel Iordănescu. He could not persuade for more inserts coach Valentin Stănescu and only returned on April 6, 1976 Ştefan Kovács back into the team. After another five games on his international career ended at the end for the time being.

Kovács ' successor Constantin Cernaianu took Mulţescu after three years in October 1979 back into the team. He missed with the team to qualify for the European Championship 1980. During the following years he came infrequently used. On November 12, 1983 he played his last match in European Championship qualifier against Cyprus.

Career as a coach

During his active career Mulţescu worked from 1985 to 1987 as player-coach of Jiul Petrosani. After the climb, 1986, he rose at the end of the 1986/87 season again from the Divizia A off and left the club.

After the end of his career in 1989, he took over his previous club UTA Arad as head coach in Divizia B. At the beginning of the season 1990/91 Mulţescu was the successor of Mircea Lucescu coach of Dinamo Bucharest. After 28 games, the club split in May 1991 from him and replaced him with Florin Halagian. In the summer of 1992 he went to Dacia Unirea Brăila, where he was replaced after half a year of Ioan Sdrobis. Then it moved Mulţescu abroad, where he was head coach of Samsunspor in 1993. During the following four years, he has always put his club in the upper middle, but failed to qualify for the European Cup. He left Samsunspor in 1997 and took over Kayseri Erciyesspor in the second Turkish league.

In the summer of 2000 Mulţescu returned to Romania. After a brief stint at Sportul Studenţesc he took over in the fall of 2001 as the successor of Constantine Stancu Astra Ploieşti in Divizia A. After the season he moved to Gaziantepspor again in Turkey. The 2002/03 season he was able to close in fourth place and lead his team so in the UEFA Cup. Nevertheless, he left Turkey and took over after short exposures at FCU Politehnica Timişoara and Apulum Alba Iulia his former club Jiul Petrosani in 2004 in Divizia B. In 2005, the club parted from him again. This was followed in the following years several engagements in the League 1 and League II that were not but of long duration. From March 2011 to October 2011 he was head coach of Sportul Studenţesc in Liga 1, March 2012, he was responsible for a short time the second division Delta Tulcea. On March 28, 2012 Mulţescu Valeriu RACHITA superseded as manager of Petrolul Ploieşti.
