Gothenburg Municipality

Gothenburg is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and the historic provinces of Västergötland and Bohuslän. The main town of the municipality is Gothenburg.

Geography

The community consists largely of the city of Gothenburg and the fourth largest Swedish island Rambergsvallen. In addition, there are a lot smaller places, however, usually have no more than 200 inhabitants, and the Gothenburg in the south upstream Gothenburg archipelago with the archipelago Asperö, Brännö, Donsö, Köpstadsö, Styrsö, Vargö, Vinga and Vrångö.

History

The name Göteborgs stad was until 1971 when the townships were abolished in the course of municipal reform and the new name Göteborgs kommun has been introduced. On June 16, 1983 community leaders decided that the term city ( swedish stad ) is applicable in the cases where there are no consequences for the community itself. For this reason, there are for example kommun on street signs both the name Göteborgs stad as Gothenburg.
