Greg Gilbert

Gregory Scott Gilbert ( born January 22, 1962 in Mississauga, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player and current coach, who in his active period from 1979 to 1996, including for the New York Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues played in the National Hockey League.

Career

Greg Gilbert began his career as a hockey player with the Toronto Marlboros, for he whose successor competition Ontario Hockey League was active from 1979 to 1982 in the junior league Ontario Hockey Association as well. During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1980 in the fourth round as a total of 80 players from the New York Islanders, for which he gave towards the end of the 1981/82 season his debut in the National Hockey League and with which the winger on immediately the prestigious Stanley Cup won. He was able to repeat with his team in the following season 's success. During his time with the Islanders of Canadians also completed some games for their farm teams Indianapolis Checkers of the Central Hockey League and Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League. For the Islanders, he has always belonged to the guide players.

Shortly before the Trade Deadline Gilbert has been delivered to the Chicago Blackhawks on 7 March 1989 in exchange for a fifth- round vote by the New York Islanders for the NHL Entry Draft in 1989. In the following three seasons of Canadians also impressed in Chicago, with good performances. Prior to the 1993/94 season as a free agent Gilbert was obliged by the New York Rangers, with whom he also won the Stanley Cup at the end of the season. He contributed 19 points scorer, of which five goals in a total of 99 games in this success. After the season was 1994/95 started late because of a lockout, he was selected in January 1995 in the NHL Waiver Draft by the St. Louis Blues, where he played one and a half years until his Karrieende at the age of 34 years.

From 1996 to 2000 Gilbert served as head coach of the Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League. in the 1996/97 season he was awarded the Louis AR Pieri Award as the best coach in the league. The 2000/01 season he began as an assistant to Don Hay at the NHL team Calgary Flames before he replaced in the course of the season Hay after his release on the position of the head coach. After a false start at the beginning of the 2002/ 03 Gilbert was itself replaced by Al MacNeil. From 2003 to 2006 he coached the OHL team of his hometown, the Mississauga IceDogs before he oversaw the Canadian team at the Under-18 Junior World Cup in 2006. He then spent three years as head coach of the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. For the season 2009/10 he moved within the AHL to the Adirondack Phantoms, was there early dismissed after a disastrous start of the season with just three points in 13 games in the 2010/11 season and again replaced by John Paddock. Over the 2011/12 season, he returned as head coach of the Saginaw Spirit back in the junior league OHL.
